Specific Need
The Hiawatha High School Alumni Association needs help funding scholarships, projects, and needs for the students of the Hiawatha School Distrtict. The Hiawatha High School Alumni Association provides several scholarships to graduating HHS seniors every year. While all students in the class are eligible, preference goes to the children of HHS Alumni. The Alumni Association also donates to projects and needs for the students of USD 415 that the district needs help funding.
Profile
The Hiawatha High School Alumni Association was founded in 1919 as a way to keep the alumni of HHS informed of the happenings in Hiawatha, in the school district, with their fellow alumni, and as a way to plan annual alumni reunion plans. Annual newsletters were mailed to all HHS alumni around the country. For many years the HHS Alumni Assocation hosted a banquet, program, and dance for all HHS alumni in conjunction with the celebrations of individual classes. The annual celebration became so popular that the weekend, held on Memorial Weekend, become locally known as "Alumni Weekend". When the venue where this event was held closed in the 2000's, attempts to hold the celebration in other locations weren't as successful, the alumni of the district moved further away, and people were less inclined to return for Alumni Weekend, the focus of the Association turned more to providing scholarships and financial donations to the district. The HHS Alumni Associtation now holds an annual golf tournament at the Hiawatha Country Club, still held on the Sunday of Alumni Weekend and in conjunction of with all classes celebrating big mile-stone reunions. All the funds raised from the golf tournament go towards paying scholarships and helping out the students of HHS and all of the Hiawatha school district, where more than 7,000 students have graduated since the inception of the Alumni Association.
